There are some sincere apologists who maintain a guilt in their technological participation, our gizmogenized alienation.  And this is not only a self-reflexive guilt inflicted from an empathy for the exploited + demolished 3rd world (although our expansive media shrinks the world the most we can usually muster is to deplore the representation from afar – that is to say, once we learn that the flies from little Abaronye’s face cannot be swatted away from the LIVING ROOM couch, all we might do is cry before we change the station, flip the channel….but that’s what self-techne is about – changing your station in life, channeling the possible)  but this guilt of techno-intrusive-complacency is rooted in a hyper-world shooting wildly up and out past the immediate one.  We don’t want to get carried away, but the rootlessness is a bit unnerving.  And it has it’s invisible effects, which we would like to acknowledge.

• We would like to implement, amongst other counter-balancing provisions, a crucial place of sanctuary.

• Where you can leave your technology at the door.

• Because a very physical (and psychical) relationship exists between our body and technology’s invisible energy…

Strategies & Projects for the Moderate/Modern Luddite:

-’Church of Moderate Luddism‘, or neutral point perspective: physical space free of technology (objects) waves and fields. Buddhist strategies of ‘detachment’ and circumambulation: Leave your objects outside the space and as you circumambulate physically cleanse your body of technologies residuals. Only by detaching yourself from technology after having been saturated in the world of waves and fields can you truly attempt to understand what it all means.

-Cluster signal jams, or the Mod-Ludd aggregate. Small totem carried by a participant gives off a small jamming signal, only strong enough to act as a bubble or umbrella to the user, however as pairs, small groups and potentially larger crowds of users cluster together and become a Mod-Ludd aggregate they form a portion of the post-natural landscape which is essentially (save their totems) off-line.

-Mod-Ludd icon(ography): poster/stencil/sticker/spam [disseminate]. Also to reach the passive audience in a subliminal way get groups of background actors or ‘extras’ to wear t-shirts, pins, hats etc. with the icon. If one were to research film locations in their city and saturate that spot in advance of shooting they could potentially infiltrate the world of t.v. and film.

-i(solation)-Pod: jam & transmit. 3 part system: microphone, jammer/hacker and transmitter. Microphone constantly receives an audio sample of the immediate environment (inside/outside), the jammer/hacker sets all the i-pods in the transmitters range to receive the audio signal. i-pod users are then fed through their isolating technologies the sound of the world outside their headphones, a (re)mediated environment.

-Electromagnetic (object)Body Interference: amplification or visualization of invisible waves through the body’s physical interference or blocking of radio or television signals. Using sets of short-range signal transmitters and receivers and creating different orientations between signal generated and signal received in programmed environments. Participants can explore a  ‘saturated’ space in a tangible way: It becomes possible to clearly notice the body’s relationship to a signal.

-Soft-spots: way finding, cartography and signified physical space. Mapping out various signal strengths (cellphone/wifi/radio/televison/gps) in various environments (city/country/suburbs/forest) and and developing a physical marking system to signify a soft-spot (that is space with the least amount of ‘friction’ from waves and fields). Soft-spots are the slivers of what remains of antiquated ‘public’ space. Soft-spots are the antithesis of HotSpots.

-Dynamic Wave Frictionometer: A (high)technology implement for the Mod-Ludd who’s always on the go. A means of low-friction navigation through the post-natural landscape. A tool for mapping out Soft-spots. Worn around the wrist like a watch, a series of LED’s indicate which waves/signals are present and approximately how strong (like the bars on your mobile phone in reverse). As the user periodically/habitually checks her wrist device for wave/signal measurements, she becomes aware of the omnipresence of technology’s invisible connections and the dynamic relationship between her own body as it passes through those connections.

-Manifesto & Mythology: ‘On the Conscious Evolution’. Myth: manifesto of unknown author(s) presumably developing out of the 1980′s french CLODO movement. ‘Discovery’ of artefacts and retroactive infiltration of those objects into existing systems of (perceived?) authority.
